George Birrell is a highly respected and sought after contemporary Scottish Artist. We were absolutely thrilled when he joined Art for Charity in 2012 at such an early stage in our development.
Having studied at the world renowned Glasgow School of Art in the 1960's and participating in the illustrious Hospitalfield Summer School in the early 1970, George's career in the Art industry was formed on very solid foundations.
After leaving The Summer School George decided to move into education and taught art and design in a number of schools for a decade. After his first period as a teacher he decided it was time to paint professionally full time and did so for five years.
In 1985 he moved back into education as a lecturer in art design and photography. He remained in the post for thirteen years lecturing to aspiring Artists. George then returned to full-time painting which proved to be a wise choice as demand for his work quickly developed.
George is most recognised for his landscape and coastal paintings. His distinctive style, which explores abstract architecture in intriguing form and light are highly coveted across the UK contemporary art world. Many of his works are centred on the Fife coast line in Scotland and fishing villages along it. These works are bursting with bold often contrasting colours reflecting the bustling traditional Scottish villages that he paints.
From the beginning of George's second spell painting professionally he has exhibited widely across the UK and abroad in group and immensely successful solo exhibitions.
